About the waterproof IP rating of smartphones

Manufacturers of phones, smartwatches, and other devices will tell you that your device is waterproof. But the actual water resistance of Apple, Sony and Samsung is different.

The word “IP rating” is often used to refer to a phone or device that is exposed to water or moisture. It is an international standard that sets the level of protection against dust and solids.

iPhone X, iPhone 8, Samsung Galaxy S8, Sony Xperia XZ1, Apple Watch 3 are all waterproof. However, not all of them have the same IP rating. The Samsung Galaxy S8, Note 8, and Sony Xperia XZ Premium have IP68, while the iPhone X and iPhone 8 have IP67.

What does IP mean ??

The word “IP” stands for “ingress protection”. This means measuring how easily dust and water can easily get inside your device. The IP is the same, and only the following numbers determine how resistant the phone is.

The two digits after the IP (for example, IP 67) indicate that the first one protects against dust (for example, sand and dust on the beach). Its numbers can be 5 or 6. Number 5 does not completely prevent the inside of the phone from getting inside, but it does prevent it from interfering to the extent that it interferes with the internal functions.

However, the number 6 can fully protect against dust and sand. Sometimes you see phone companies refer to their phones as IPX8. Instead of specifying the dust resistance of their products, they are replaced with “X”.

The second number in the IP rating is the water resistance of the device. He is a little more complicated.

Almost all mobile phones have IP ratings starting from 3 to 4. 3, 4 and 4 can protect against water level flooding and will not be damaged even if it gets wet due to rainwater.

No. 5 is waterproof to 6.3mm. No. 6 protects against water from 12.5mm. These are just the tip of the iceberg. The real water resistance is 7’s. 7 can protect you even if you fall 1 meter under the water. However, if it is more than 1 meter, it must be safe from the latest IP 68. But no phone is completely waterproof yet. When it comes to water resistance level 9, you know how many hours it can last even if you fall into the water. This is the kind of phone that can be completely protected.

Some phones do not get badly damaged for a while, even if they are flooded.

Which phones have the highest IP rating?

There is no 100% waterproof phone yet. However, in the event of an accidental flood or deep water, a good IP rating is acceptable.

The most rugged phones that can protect against vibration, water and dust are the AGM X2, Doogee S60 and Ulefone Armor 2. If you buy a phone with a high IP rating that is waterproof, you do not have to worry about taking the pool to the bathroom.

IP 67 includes the iPhone X, Huawei Mate 10 Pro, Google Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, HTC U11, iPhone 8, and iPhone 7. IP 68 includes the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8 Plus, LG V30, LG G6, Sony Xperia XZ1, Sony Xperia XZ premium and Samsung Galaxy S7.
